I really love Connecticut’s glottal stop

ct 300x236 I really love Connecticuts glottal stopDo folks from Connecticut know that they use a glottal stop in lieu of a hard “T” when saying things like “Clinton” and “kitten,” etc?

Cli-in and Ki-in?

It’s very cute and I wonder what the linguistic heritage is. I assume it’s a vestige of a British lineage.

I am always amazed when ancestral vestigial linguistic traces persist in modern linguistic pools in a country that’s so connected and addicted to a television that generally uses “proper” American annunciation.

The cute thing about Connecticut’s glottal stop is that the rest of their accent is no accent at all. To me, the missing Ts is the only tell that someone’s from CT.

Video Book Review of Getting Past No By William Ury

I recently finished reading “Getting Past No” by William Ury and decided to create a video review about the book. Great book! Check out what I have to say in the video below:

Transcript:

Hi I’m HowToPhil and I’m going to be reviewing “Getting Past No” by William Ury.

William Ury is the director of the Global Negotiation Project at Harvard University, so he knows negotiation.

This is a book about negotiating in difficult situations and with difficult people. In it he covers every element of negotiation in a difficult situation and still managing to come to an agreement.

It’s peppered with stories and anecdotal evidence and tips here and there as well.

I would suggest it as a great read.

On an informational level I’d give it 5 out of 5 stars. It’s full of information from a man who knows negotiation.

And on an entertainment level I would also give it 5 out of 5 stars. The stories are well written, he adds a nice warm voice to the subject and it’s hard to put down.

So again, I would suggest getting “Getting Past No” by William Ury. If you have any questions or comments, leave them in the comments section below. And I hope that you all have a nice day. Bye.

Samsung reveals 3D transparent and flexible tablet, AMOLED

Samsung recently released a new demo (in Korean) of a transparent and flexible tablet that offers video, instant translation, and advanced mobile technology that is absolutely mesmerizing. This “tablet of the future” has a bendable 3D, clear screen with what seems to have the capability to display holographic images.

Although this concept has not yet hit the market, Samsung does intend to introduce real flexible phones to the public in early 2012.

The Samsung AMOLED reminds me much of Nokia‘s prototype, the “Kinetic Device.” Nokia is also working on introducing mobile phones with bendable displays and flexible interfaces. Click here for more info. on the Nokia Kinetic Device.

The AMOLED display is amazingly thin, yet tough and can even withstand the impact of a hammer, which has been shown in videos. I’m excited to see what other innovative concepts are to come.

The Inside Experience connects social media with film

insideexperience 300x191 The Inside Experience connects social media with filmImagine a film, where the audience is able to choose what happens next via social media. That’s exactly what you get with Inside, a project launched in July by Intel and Toshiba, to showcase exactly how talented technology (specifically their new computer) has become.

Protagonist Christina (Emmy Rossum of Phantom of the Opera fame) has been kidnapped against her will and is being kept in a dark room with limited provisions. Her only tool on the road to freedom? A computer with untraceable internet access. Eight mini-episodes chronicle Christina’s social media journey as she tries to discover her whereabouts and escape.

During the launching process, viewers were able to submit suggestions and advice for the main character. Unlike other films, the production staff actually took this input into account and edit it into the final full length film. The Inside Experience, in entirety, will air on September 6 at 8pm EST at www.thesinsideexperience.com.

Directed by D.J. Caruso of Disturbia and I am Number Four fame, production credits also go to Avatar‘s Academy Award winning photographer Mauro Fiore. I was hooked. The acting is there, the project does a good job of profiling the different communication tools on sites like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, and spoiler alert– in the miniseries, there is a happy ending. I guess social media does really solve all of our problems.

Is Rebecca Black a social media icon or the downfall of online credibility?

I think we have all heard our elders say, “What is this stuff that you kids call music?

Rebecca.Black My.Moment. .Single 1811419417 300x300 Is Rebecca Black a social media icon or the downfall of online credibility? In my day we had REAL music!” Well, I think I have finally caught myself sounding like my grandfather…

Rebecca Black, 14, is a pop singer who’s music video, “Friday” went viral last March. She is now stating her claim to fame with a semi-new music video, “My Moment.” The song “Friday” received extensive media attention and was deemed to be, “the worst song ever” with more then 160 million views. Countless parodies later, the video was removed from YouTube after a controversy as to who owned the rights to the video.

With the debut of her new single and music video,  “My Moment” receiving more then 17 million views in just one week, is Rebecca Black a new social media icon? Or is Black foreshadowing for the downfall in online credibility?

TNW shows the top 10 YouTube videos of 2010 and a little less than half of them embarrass me to say that they are the top viewed videos last year. Number four especially, Annoying Orange Wazzup, which consists of apples, oranges and bananas saying “whatzzup” at each other with human eyes and mouths, until the apple is cut in half, then they all start screaming. Have we really resorted to letting talking fruit entertain us enough to get 38 million views? The winner with nearly 86 million views is the Bed Intruder Song, which creates a song out of a news broadcast about a woman who was attacked in her bed by an intruder. The song makes fun of what the brother says in the report, essentially coming off as racist and judgmental.

I can’t say that all the top 10 YouTube videos show us a downgrade in online credibility. One, in fact, shocked and amazed me, Greyson Chance, a 12-year-old boy who in the video played the piano and sang the song “Paparazzi,” originally by Lady Gaga. This young boy plays and sings with more passion and talent then many famous artists do. I personally think he may be giving Lady Gaga a run for her money.

Although I’m sure we can all admit to indulging in some sort of ridiculous online video, I think we can at least say that’s not all the web has to offer us. Even though Rebecca Black has obtained her claim to fame through an obnoxious song and music video, her rise to fame could give hope to the people who actually have talent that maybe someday it’ll work for them too. Who knows, maybe 10 years down the road Greyson Chance will get that record deal instead of Rebecca Black.

Hello, this is HowToPhil and today I’m going to show you how to remove applications and games from your Facebook profile. If you’re like me you may have granted access to several applications and games on Facebook, but have found over time that all of the messages, wall posts, and so forth from these applications and games become irritating, especially for those applications you no longer use and games you no longer play.

To begin the process you’ll have to be logged into Facebook.

Once logged in you’ll want to click on the drop down menu labeled “Account” in the upper right hand corner of the page and then, within that menu click on the “Privacy Settings” link. This will take you to the main Privacy Settings page on Facebook.

On this page locate and click on the “Edit your settings” link under “Apps and Websites” near the bottom of the page. This will take you to the general privacy settings page for Applications, Games, and Websites on Facebook.

On this page locate and click on the “Remove” link in the “Apps you use” section. This will bring you to a page listing all of the applications and games you have granted access to on Facebook.

Locate an application or game you would like to remove and then click the “X” to the right of the “Edit Settings” link for that application or game. A diaglog box will appear to verify that you actually wish to remove the application. Click on the “Remove” button in this dialog box if you would like to remove the application. A new dialog box will appear indicating that you have successfully removed the application. Click on the “Okay” button.

You may remove as many applications as you like in this way.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you and have a nice day.

Doing wrong leadin e1299544675533 150x84 5 Things You Are Doing Wrong On TwitterEveryone either has made these mistakes, is making these mistakes, or will make these mistakes (hopefully not after watching the video and reading this post) when using Twitter.

Feel free to share the video on your own blog using the embed code below:

  1. Only tweeting about yourself
    • You will come off as boring, self-centered, and generally lose followers
    • You will miss out on gaining followers, since talking about people often leads to them following you
  2. Not tweeting at all
    • If you don’t tweet then you don’t exist
    • To be relevent and read on twitter you must post
  3. Tweeting too often about every minute detail of your day
    • No one cares about your steak unless it’s really good and they can get one too
    • No one wants to know how many times you go to the bathroom
    • All this extra noise will drive followers away
  4. Repeating your tweets too often
    • If your followers see the same tweets over and over they WILL get annoyed
    • Your followers will think you are a robot or a spammer
    • Your followers WILL unfollow you
  5. Not repeating your tweets
    • Not everyone is logged into twitter at the same time
    • Twitter is a STREAM of information
    • If you don’t repeat a little then your tweets will vanish under a flood of more recent tweets
