The Online Community Is Inexorably Global: Are You?

s GLOBAL COMMUNITY large4 The Online Community Is Inexorably Global: Are You?You are awesome! You totally get me. Thanks, Michael. I almost jumped on your comment before I read all the way through, “with the internet constantly expanding, our world is only shrinking.” Why? Because, while that may well be true-ish, it’s also completely wrong. It’s only making the world smaller the way the Post has made the world smaller, commercial airlines have made is smaller, etc. I guess it makes the world of cities, the “rich” and the literate together. Cell phones have done a better job — the old dumb phones with the SIM cards — the old flip phones have done more. Technology surely has, but the Internet has only allowed commerce, as you say, propaganda, if you will, news, as they call it, and media to make the world smaller. I have recently gotten into the world of overland motorcycling and the world is just as bug, lonely, and desolate when you’re on the back of a motorcycle in the wilderness. And, if you have a heart attack or break a leg, they’re still hours and hours away from help — even if you can communicate via satellite. It takes hours and days to physically get places from other places. But you get it, so I won’t go on.

Seth Godin on On Being with Krista Tippett

lead sethgodin alt 1024x643 Seth Godin on On Being with Krista TippettSeth Godin is so far in the present and future that he believes the culture is shifted as opposed to shifting. There is an important continuum and constant transition over time. There are still Americans who are dallying in the 19th century. Most are still cogs, jealously wanting to still be cogs, and very few — maybe a fraction — are the “players of ideas,” the “makers of things,” the “artists of their lives.” Seth Godin is both a modernist but also mostly (still) a futurist. I may well live in his future, but most do not, they still want Rolls Royces and Persian Rugs as signifiers to define who we are to others. They do address this, though, on the On Being podcast.

When the entire US Adopts California gun Laws

You all know I am a gun owner by now.

I assume that the entire US will have adopted California gun laws by the end of 2013 and I don’t mind. It’s annoying, but I don’t care. I am really more of a Mousegun/Bolt/Single-shot gun sort of guy, anyway.

I really would be happy to just own my .22LR CZ 452 “Special Military Training rifle.” — the long rifle in the photo and not anything more than the 22-calibre rifle you might have shot as a child. It has 5-round detachable magazine, is a “tack driver,” the ammo is cheap, and I also have a couple 10-round magazines as well. It’s a perfect thing.

452 When the entire US Adopts California gun Lawsglock26 When the entire US Adopts California gun LawsIn the spirit of the California law, if my choices are limited to a 10-round capacity, I will only buy firearms with a 10-round or fewer capacity. I never understood why people would even buy a Glock 17 — a 17-round capacity magazine — and put a California-approved 10-round magazine in there. I have a Glock 26, the Baby Glock (not for babies) and it has a native 10-round capacity. That’s what I would own.

cz75b When the entire US Adopts California gun LawsI will surely miss my new favorite pistol, my CZ 75B, though, with its native 16-round-capacity. And yes, I like it enough that I would buy California-compliant 10-round magazines in order to keep it — but that’s an exception. The CZ’s really a nice piece.

The Evolution of my Fixie as I get Older

Ok, first I had a very sleek Bianchi Pista that was a fixie. Then I got a SoMa Delancey which was single speed with freewheel and dual brakes.

Now, I have a Surly Steamroller single speed with a double-secret: I had the cool kids at Papillon Cycles install a Sturmey-Archer S3X 3-speed fixie hub kit onto my 1-speed bike. Why?

surlySteamrollerJavaShack The Evolution of my Fixie as I get Older

Because of hills. Because I don’t want to arrive sweaty. Because I know I will choose not to ride my bike if there are minor DC hills between me and where I want to ride.

So, as a result, I have reduced my street cred even further by “downgrading” my fixie to, basically, what’s the equivalent of an English Three Speed or a Dutch bike.

Especially with that awesome canvas rucksack my buddy Andrew gave me and that cool B17 Brooks Saddle. Come on, it’s cool, right?

I am not just getting old and tired and losing what’s left of my knees. Right?

Talon Grips are a Major Upgrade

media httpdistilleryi zDtHl16.jpg.scaled50016 Talon Grips are a Major Upgrade

I have been getting pretty used to the gritty and grippy texture of the new 4th generation of Glock pistols.

Neither my Gen 3 G23 or my Gen 1 G17 have this sort of texture so I thought WWH45D — what would  do — and he’s a huge fan of Talon Grips, which he says, at least in sandpaper, help out with his accuracy and handling, so I ordered a couple sets and they were a snap to install.

Pretty much just use an alcohol wipe to remove any oil, schmutz, or dirt, and then you remove the sticker backing, place it according to the instructions, make sure the three front strap pieces go under the left side panel, and the just blast it with a very hot hair drier until everything shrinks-to-fit.

Err on the side of more heat and also make sure you press everything down and make sure there are no gaps or bubbles. And squeeze and press. Doesn’t it look great!

I installed it myself so it really must not be very tough and each grip was cut perfectly for the pistol I ordered it for.

My Ruger MkIII Target “678″ is way better than I am

media httpdistilleryi frEgb1.jpg.scaled5001 My Ruger MkIII Target 678 is way better than I am

My Ruger MkIII Target “678″ is way better than me. Reliable, hyper-accurate, solid, durable. You should get one. Even better with a Volquartsen trigger job and a set of ergo grips.

Sadly, they don’t make this tapered-barrel model anymore with the 6 7/8″ barrel, but since they’re bomb-proof, used is as good as new when it comes to an MK — some people actually swear to the MkII Rugers above the MkIII anyway, so get what you like.

Some say there’s nothing better than the MkII Government Target — it was professionally accurized and also came with a 6″ bull barrel, which supposedly does a better job at preventing muzzle vibrations and issues with rapid-fire-associated overheating which can temporarily warp the barrel just a wee bit.

That said, I will never be good enough to concerned with microvibration- or heat-related inaccuracy.

My Trusty Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Runners

media httpdistilleryi xkEym25.jpg.scaled50025 My Trusty Mizuno Wave Rider 15 Runners

These limited edition Mizuno Wave Rider 15s as my aspirational running shoes.

They’re better, more capable, and bolder than I am and when I wear them I work harder because I really hate seeing weak, pathetic, weekend warriors who buy and use gear they don’t deserve just because they can afford them.

Like seeing a soft, doughy, dude on a weekend ride who’s sporting a CervĂ©lo S3 — that’s me in my Mizunos — and it was even more me when I had another 30-pounds on me.

But, as I work out and as my shoulders become broader and my hips become narrower, I feel more comfortable sporting these awesome running shoes.

And, when I burn through these, I’ll probably get myself a pair of Wave Creation 13 running shoes as well.
