The main purpose of social media is to connect us to other people and to the rest of the world effortlessly, not to give us privacy.
A lot of us would like to have a clear division between our private life offline and online, but can we really have it both ways? Being “social” and at the same time being “private”?
Let us take Facebook for example. We post something to our wall and that is already in Facebook’s database. We can keep it private by updating privacy settings, you can show the post to your friends only, friends of friends, your network, to everybody or make it private and show it only to yourself. Well of course if you make it that private, you are limiting the interactions and the connection made (or possibly made) by that post, you are taking away the social part of social media itself, and it ceases to be social media at all.
