I had quite a few people ask me to explain the new Facebook Groups and how to create one, so I made this video tutorial:
Here’s the script if you’d like to read through it:
Recently Facebook updated it’s groups feature and the update has changed Facebook Groups significantly. The new Facebook Groups are an entirely new product unlike the Facebook Groups feature of the past.
With Facebook groups you can create a social network within the social network. Essentially creating a section of Facebook that only you and a select few individuals from your friends list have access to.
This has some advantages. Namely you and certain friends can have a private space to discuss subjects not suited to or uninteresting to a larger group. Each group also comes with a group chat, however since the group chat cannot be turned off individually it has the potential to become noisy and irritating in larger and more vocal groups.
Also while it is possible to add friends to a group without their permission, it is not suggested that you do so, since this is frowned upon by the general population of Facebook.
It is assumed that Facebook will make groups opt-in eventually and that they will have a means for silencing noisy group chats.
Now that you understand what the new Facebook Groups feature is and what some of the advantages and drawbacks are we can explore how to create your very own Facebook Group.
To begin log into Facebook as I have already done.
Once you are logged into Facebook go to Facebook.com/groups and you will see this page.
Locate the “Create Group” button and click on it.
A group creation dialog will be opened.
You can choose a mini-icon for your group by clicking on this drop-down menu. These mini-icons help visually set the theme of your group: such as video creation, broken-hearts, sports, etc.
We will leave it as the default “General Group” icon.
You must give your group a name. My Group will be named HowToPhil.
At this point you can add members to your group by typing in their names. Like this. (Chris Abraham is typed in) or you may leave it blank and add group members later.
Next you will set the level of group privacy.
The default level is closed. Member names are public, but the content (such as posts, videos, photos, etcetera) are all private and can only be viewed by group members.
Open is the most public privacy setting. All members and all content are publicly visible.
Secret is the least public privacy setting, hiding both content and member names.
For HowToPhil we will choose Open.
Once you have chosen a mini-icon, a group name, added any members, and chosen a privacy level you may click the “create” button.
In a moment you will be taken to your new group page. Your group is now created.
I hope this has helped you. Thank you and have a nice day.
